Democracy Club

Hello,

Welcome to the September edition of our newsletter — a quick breakdown of what we’ve been up to over the last month.

We hope you enjoyed some summer and that you are as, erm, excited as we are about the return of politics, parliament and the rest.

Best wishes,

Joe

We’re looking for non-executive board members.

In mid-August, we published this advert seeking board members to help us to strengthen Democracy Club. We’ve been honoured by the response and look forward to many conversations over the next month. It’s not too late to express your interest — or to recommend someone you think would be good! Please email hello@democracyclub.org.uk.

We’re nearly at every election.

We’ve made significant process on capturing the details of every by-election taking place in the UK (at district council level and above). This will represent a leap forward in open data on democracy in the UK and mean we could offer services like local election alerts. It also means there’s always more data on candidates to be found! Get stuck in via the crowdsourcer.

The UK needs an open address database.

Much of our work depends on high quality address data. It’s not cool that this is not available openly to the public. Sym blogged about why this matters — to wide support from people involved in democratic engagement, open data and beyond.

We’re joining others to experiment with the 2018 local elections in London.

What happens if you divide up groups of similar wards in London and run different voter registration and turnout activities in them? Democracy Club will be lightly involved with a project of Unbound Philanthropy, Hope Not Hate and Bite the Ballot to find out. Updates to follow!

Don’t forget, you can follow what we’re working on at any time.

Just a reminder that you can see what we’re working on at any time by viewing our public to-do lists via Trello. You can see what’s in our longer term planning via our ‘Icebox’ board.

We love monthly donors! Please chip in £3/month here.
