Hello,
Welcome to the first Democracy Club newsletter! We plan to make this a regular briefing of what we’re up to in our work to make democracy work better for everyone.
In this first edition (keep it, maybe you can sell it on eBay later) we’re looking back at the last year of elections and setting goals for the next. We also present: our new, more open way of working; our localised data on polling location searches; plans for the local elections in May 2018; and we’re soon to start the search for a new board.
If you’ve no idea why you’re receiving this, and you don’t want to receive another, there’s an unsubscribe link below.
Happy reading, and enjoy the summer,
Joe
We wrote an annual report…
We had 1.8m uses of the polling station finder! It covered 61% of the UK by election day. We had a third of general election candidates provide a statement to voters. And we partnered with Facebook to get information in front of everyone, where they are. Much more in the full report, which you can read here.
...and established goals for our next year.
These include improving our data coverage, services, planning better research and evaluation, strengthening the organisation, and a few fun potential ‘Democracy Club Labs’ projects. More here!
We now work in ‘sprints’ — you can join us!
We’re using public Trello boards to organise our to-do lists and you can follow along and comment on our work as it happens. There’s one board for our giant to-do list and one board for the current two-week sprint. Read more in this blog post.
You can find out how many people near you used the polling station finder!
We’ve published the number of lookups per local authority area — go here to see what happened in yours! Chris also wrote about how we’ve iterated our approach to getting data from councils here.
Local elections take place in 2018 — we’re on it.
London will see thousands of candidates stand across 32 boroughs. Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle are also ‘all-out’, i.e. every seat is up for election. As always, we’ll be collecting data on all the candidates and we’re hoping to work more closely with more local authorities and civic groups than ever before.
We’re starting the search for a new board.
Watch the blog in the next few days for an update and a job spec for new board members to help us take Democracy Club forward.
Can anyone think of a good democracy pun?
Well done for getting this far down the email. Your reward — can you think of a better name for this newsletter? Cycling UK’s, for example, is called ‘Cycle Clips’, which is quite good. Surely there’s a good democracy pun out there for us? Reply to this email...
You can also keep up with us on twitter, facebook and on our blog.
